Meeting Minutes – May 19, 2019

 

Call to Order:  Chair Beverly Hugo called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM

Caucus for Annual Convention: To elect 34 delegates and 6 alternates to the Democratic State Convention, to be held on September 14, 2019, Mass Mutual Center, 1277 Main St., Springfield, MA 01103.  This an “issues” convention.

Reading of the Letter of the Chair, written by Gus Bickford, Chair, Massachusetts Democratic Party.

Friday, September 13 – parties – opportunity to get to know delegates and candidates.

Saturday, September 14, Registration/breakfast 7:30 AM; attendance in the hall by 8:30 AM  Roll calls; prompt attendance required for the entire day (be part of “the process”).

Ex Officio Delegates include FDC Chair, Beverly Hugo, plus State Democratic Committee Members –State Rep. Jack P. Lewis, Chris Lorant, Ilma Paixao,  Norma Shulman, and Parwez Wahid.

Caucus Voting as per Caucus Rules/Procedures – (incl. add-ons/alternates).

  • Motion to nominate, J. Duffy, 2nd Lorant; in favor of electing slate of those nominated by P. Wahid – unanimous;
  • motion to vote people in absentia Stoodt,. Close nominations as per Chair, B. Hugo – unanimous.
  • See Exhibits A and B annexed hereto for a role of those elected. Please note that Alternate, John Stefanini, who was voted in absentia pursuant to a motion by Christopher Lorent, subsequently removed his name from participation upon learning of his unauthorized nomination and election.

Business Meeting:  Announcements – N.  Shulman –if interested, sign-up for Sen. Ed Markey’s re-election, consider reading his sign of support from Framingham.

Introduction of Candidates for Municipal Office:

City Council Candidates:

  • Cesar Stewart-Morales, CPA, Dist. 2, City Council, homeowner, grew up in Framingham, Fuller MS, FHS, BA Bentley, expertise in finance, municipal budget issues, proven commitment to City of Framingham.
  • Robert Case, Dist. 5, City Council, financial background, SIFOC Strategic Initiatives & Financial Oversight Com., Chair, 3 children attend Framingham public schools, spirit of collaboration.
  • Mario Alvarez, Dist. 8, City Council.

School Committee Candidates:

  • Beverly Hugo, Dist. 1, “grateful for past support”; working for all kids; raising achievement levels.
  • Adam Freudberg, Dist. 4, Fuller School Project, groundbreaking, Tues., June 18, 9AM.

 Subcommittee Reports:

Legislative Subcommittee – K. Fusaris/B. LeDuc –introduced The Save Right Whales Act of 2019, H.R. 1568.  Discussed the Mendon Democratic Town Committee’s efforts on Ranked Choice Voting, 24 candidates, May 30, 2019 deadline. Advised of upcoming media to be found on MuellerBookClub.com re: Mueller’s testimony, House Judiciary Committee

Reports from City Council:

Cheryl Tully Stoll – Pro Choice; Women’s Rights – work to organize activities.

June 1, 2019 Framingham – Flag raising; Gay Pride

Chair Announcements:

  • Friday Concerts on the Common begin June 21, 2019;
    • FDC subcommittees will be responsible for manning the FDC Tent on a rotating basis. This should be a shared responsibility and should not fall on one member or one small number of members as a weekly obligation.
  • Happy Birthday to Mel Warshaw! A cake was enjoyed by all.
