Shepard Introduces Resolution To Welcome Immigrants

Framingham City Council unanimously adopt proposal

Framingham City Councilor and FDC member Margareth Shepard introduced a resolution to the Council that calls for the creation of a task force to bridge the communication gap between Framingham’s immigrant community and government officials.

Shepard, who is the FDC Outreach Officer, pointed out the fear that immigrants face when interacting with government authorities.  She stated that immigrants are under a constant threat of deportation and as a result will not report crimes and abuses.

Framingham State Representative and FDC member Maria Robinson spoke in favor of the resolution citing the upcoming 2020 census and the state’s need for an accurate count.  The resolution would allow immigrants to feel more comfortable in filling out census forms. (An accurate census count impacts the level of federal funding that state receives.)
